Milliliters to Pounds: Convert mL to lbs
This conversion crosses two systems at once: milliliters are metric and measure volume, pounds are imperial and measure weight. That is why it needs two numbers, a density and a fixed conversion factor.
How the Calculation Works
pounds = milliliters x density (g/mL) / 453.592
The 453.592 is the number of grams in one pound. Run 1,000 mL of water through it and the answer is 2.2046 pounds, the figure behind the familiar rule that a liter of water weighs about 2.2 lb. If you would rather see the metric weight first, the milliliters to grams converter gives the gram total that this formula then divides.
A useful shortcut for water: divide milliliters by 454 and you have pounds, accurate to within a fraction of a percent.

Pounds, Not Fluid Ounces
Pounds are unambiguous: they always measure weight. The confusion in imperial units sits one level down, with the ounce, which exists as both a weight unit and a volume unit. Sixteen fluid ounces make a US pint, and sixteen weight ounces make a pound, and those two sixteens are unrelated.
The old rhyme that a pint weighs a pound comes from this near-coincidence. A US pint of water is 473 mL, which weighs 1.04 lb, so the saying is close for water and wrong for anything else.
Where This Gets Used
Most people reaching for milliliters to pounds are working across a border. A product is manufactured and labeled in metric, then shipped, weighed or sold in a country that works in pounds: paint and coatings, imported foods, homebrewing ingredients, aquarium dosing and courier weights all run into it.
For shipping, remember that the liquid is only part of the load. The bottle, the box and the packing material all add weight, and carriers round up to the next weight band. If the paperwork on the other end is metric, work out what each liter weighs in kilograms and quote both figures.
Reference Figures
- 1 pound = 453.592 grams = 16 weight ounces
- 1,000 mL of water = 2.205 lb
- 500 mL of water = 1.102 lb, close to a US pint and a bit more than a pound
- 1 US gallon of water = 8.345 lb
- 1 imperial gallon of water = 10.02 lb, since it is a larger gallon
Common Questions
How many mL are in a pound?
For water, one pound fills 453.6 mL. For lighter liquids it takes more volume to reach a pound: cooking oil needs about 493 mL. For heavier ones it takes less, with honey reaching a pound in roughly 319 mL. The pound is fixed; what changes is how much space that weight occupies. The liters to grams calculator runs the same density list if your starting amount is in liters.
Is 500 mL half a pound?
No, it is a little over a full pound. Five hundred milliliters of water weighs 1.1 lb. The mix-up is easy to make because 500 is half of 1,000, but 1,000 mL weighs 2.2 lb rather than 2 lb, so halving it lands above a pound rather than below it.
Why is a pound 453.592 grams?
The figure comes from an international agreement in 1959, when the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries fixed the pound at exactly 0.45359237 kilograms to end small national differences. Every modern conversion between pounds and grams traces back to that definition.
